The dream of immersion in a virtual environment has existed for several decades. In the nineties, movies made consumers’ dreams come true. However, the companies at that time did not have any products ready for the market. The hype of the nineties ultimately failed due to high costs and immature electronics.

Revolution through current technologies

With the latest display and sensor electronics, a completely new generation of end devices is waiting in the wings. In particular, the young Californian company Oculus VR has provided the impetus for the current new developments with its first product Oculus Rift - in cooperation with Samsung. Well-known companies like Google, Microsoft, Valve/HTC and Sony have since launched similar products.

Universal use

The potential uses of virtual reality have only just begun to be explored. Nevertheless, an unprecedented range of applications can already be imagined. Applications can easily be found across numerous fields; such as culture (virtual archaeology and museums, architecture), research (simulation of complex structures, investigation of consumer behavior), development (building planning, simulation, CAD design), life sciences (virtual operations in medicine, training and knowledge transfer, training and simulation of rescue operations, therapy of physical and mental impairments), sales (virtual vehicle inspection) and entertainment (games, communication, films).
