We are delighted to introduce our new research project: HIRAC - Hardware Independent Robotic Assistance Controller. Cadida Software, in cooperation with Offenburg University of Applied Sciences, has launched this exciting project to bring lasting improvements to the quality of life of people with full-body paralysis and people with locked-in syndrome.

People with full-body paralysis and patients with locked-in syndrome face considerable challenges in everyday life. Even basic actions such as picking up a glass of water are often beyond their reach. Their limited ability to speak also makes it difficult for them to use voice-controlled devices. The HIRAC project aims to help these people while also easing the burden on care staff.

The vision is to develop an assistance system consisting of artificial intelligence (AI), eye-tracking control of the wheelchair, a gripper arm on the wheelchair and speech output. This system is intended to enable people with full-body paralysis to carry out everyday tasks independently. In particular, it is crucial to develop a component that is compatible with commercially available wheelchairs, robotic arms, gripping mechanisms and eye-tracking glasses and can control them. This component is called HIRAC (Hardware Independent Robotic Assistance Controller).

Our task is to develop this hardware-independent middleware, which can solve the robotic gripping tasks. This middleware integrates a powerful AI that brings together and controls eye-tracking control, image processing, sensor feedback and object manipulation.

We are proud to be able to work on this pioneering project with the support of the Central Innovation Programme for SMEs (ZIM). This funding enables us to drive forward the development and implementation of HIRAC at full strength.

We are confident that HIRAC will make a significant contribution to improving the quality of life of people with full-body paralysis and people with locked-in syndrome. Read the detailed article on this research project here.
