Laboratory image processing: software for life sciences and laboratory instruments

Laboratories produce countless images every day. Microscope images, fluorescence images, images from analytical instruments. Analysing them by hand costs time and comparability. We develop software that analyses laboratory and instrument images automatically. For research laboratories and for manufacturers of laboratory instruments.

Biology and computer science in one team

Our team includes colleagues with degrees and doctorates in the life sciences. They understand what happens in the laboratory and translate it into software. We have carried out projects in cell biology, molecular biology, medical research, bioinformatics and the development of laboratory instruments, among other fields.

What we analyse

  • Detecting and counting cells. Even in dense samples and with varying image quality.
  • Finding features. Cells with specific properties or cells labelled using laboratory techniques.
  • Measuring fluorescence. Finding, measuring and counting bright spots, droplets or chambers.
  • Analysing microscope images. Shapes, sizes and distributions, comparable across many samples.

Software for laboratory instruments

For manufacturers, we develop the software for their instruments. The integration of cameras and sensors, the analysis of the images, the user interface and the export of the results. More on this under Camera Integration and User Interface (GUI) Development.

An example: finding single cells

In single-cell genomics, the genetic material of individual cells is analysed. To do this, cells must be isolated individually from a solution. Instruments such as cell printers do this with the help of software. Image recognition finds single cells and cells with specific features before they are isolated. These are exactly the kinds of tasks we solve.

Project example: digital PCR

Our project example on digital PCR shows how image processing helps with DNA analysis.

Laboratory instruments and the Cyber Resilience Act

Laboratory instruments with software usually fall under the Cyber Resilience Act. In vitro diagnostic medical devices are excluded, as separate rules apply to them. You can read what this means for your instrument under Cyber Resilience Act.

Getting started: the Image Processing Feasibility Study

In the feasibility study, we analyse your laboratory or microscope images and build a prototype of the algorithm, classic or AI-based. You receive a study report with detection rate, limits and recommendations on camera, lighting and software. The feasibility study costs a fixed price of €3,900 plus VAT. You can find all packages under Fixed-Price Starter Packages.
