BricsCAD add-in: 3D geometry for spacers and clamps

Software development of a BricsCAD add-in in C++ that generates spacers and clamps for conductor cables as 3D solids and prepares them for export.

Customer: Provider of planning software for high-voltage switchgear
Technologies: C++, BRX SDK, BricsCAD, 3D solids, Visual Studio

    Task

In our customer's planning software, spacers and clamps are pure data objects without geometry. They are therefore missing from the 3D view and the 3D export, although users want to see them. A simplified shape is sufficient. It does not have to show every detail of the real component.

    Solution

First, we reviewed the customer's specification and reported back open points and inconsistencies. Then the add-in was developed:

    • Spacers: for bundles of two to eight sub-conductors, arranged in a circle or in a row and distributed evenly along a power line.
    • Clamps: with flat or bolt connection, aligned horizontally and vertically using dedicated angle logic.
    • Export: Each solid becomes a block with filleted edges.
    • Data on the object: The dimensions are attached to the solid as attributes. Layers and factors are stored in a configuration file.

The project has been running since 2026.

    Benefits

3D models and exports show the complete installation, with spacers and clamps. Nobody has to model these components by hand.
